Dementia - Discussing Is Understanding

I have written previously about my own experience with memory loss and dementia and how it can affect a relative. Dementia is certainly not an easy subject to write about, but in writing about it we understand it. By understanding it, we are able to spot the signs in others and hopefully discover how it is caused and how we can lessen its effects, or even better, prevent it altogether.
There are those who are uncomfortable with the subject. They find it hard to come to terms with the condition and would sooner not discuss it. Worst still, they choose not to accept the events and feel that such illnesses shouldn't be discussed, no matter how beneficial it may be to do so.
I spent considerable time researching dementia for a position I held a few years ago, and spent many hours with staff who cared for people suffering with dementia. On several occasions, I witnessed first hand the devastating effect of dementia.
My current work in mental health support and therapy brings me into contact with others who have been affected by dementia. My writing and recollections of my own experiences with dementia have provided a unique and personal perspective, and I have been encouraged by the responses I have received to continue in my work.

My work will continue be published via my website and through my Spalding based support group.

Lynda Bellingham
